This project was designed to teach us how much we identify with a product by the semiotics of type and colour. How often we don't see the product name, but rather a symbol. The eye recognises the shape of the name and the mind identifies and registers it rather than literally reading the words letter by letter.

An except from my workbook:

The two products I chose to do my label swap on were Colgate toothpaste and Toblerone chocolate. I felt this was an interesting swap to undertake, as the two products are almost the antithesis of one another. Whilst one plays a hand in rotting our teeth, the other one does the opposite by cleaning them.

Although both pieces of packaging are similar in shape and length, I felt there was enough contrast when taking into account their individual colouring – as well as the additional fact that toothpaste and chocolate are virtual opposites – to pull the swap off.

This is really cool. And i did believe it was toblerone for a minute, even though i knew something was wrong. That is really interesting about the mind, i might try something out myself.

They say "Guns don't kill people, people kill people." Well I think the guns help. If you stood there and yelled BANG, I don't think you'd kill to many people.
